We bought a zoo – worth the watch

Our blogging friend Holly posted a poem about being courageous, which reminded me of a quote from the movie “We bought a zoo.” The quote is from the father, played by Matt Damon, when he passed on this piece of wisdom to his children, “All you need is twenty seconds of courage.”

But, I am getting ahead of myself. The movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Thomas Haden Church, Colin Ford, Stephanie Szostak and a host of others. It is about the true story of a widowed father buying a run down, small zoo in a bold attempt to reconnect with his kids after they lost their mother.

It is a feel good movie about relationships between families, friends, colleagues and animals. It is peppered with poignant scenes, which I will forego to avoid spoiling it for others.

It is one of those movies I could watch again as there are multitude of interesting characters. The brother, played by Thomas Hayden Church, is the appointed steward of his brother’s wife’s money, as she knew of her husband impulsive behavior. Hayden Smith usually plays a comic foil, so it is a different kind of role for him as he is a conscience to Damon’s character.

Twenty seconds of courage plays a pivotal role in the movie. In essence, the key to making any kind of change is summoning up twenty seconds to act on it. If you can do that, the path forward will open or you will at least have an answer if it does not.

Give it a chance if you have not seen in it. If you have, let me know what you think. For those who have not, you may want to steer clear of the comments to avoid plot reveals.

  1. Dear Keith,

I have never seen the movie, but based on your recommendation, I’ll watch it in the next couple of days. I could use a “feel good” movie just about now. Thanks for sharing.

    Hugs, Gronda

  2. Note to Readers: Speaking of twenty seconds of courage, there is viral footage of a waitress in Georgia who decided enough was enough. After a man walked past her and cupped her rear end with his hand, she noticeably gathered her frustration and proceeded to yank him to the ground by the back of his shirt and refused to let him get up. Her boss called the police and he has been charged with sexual battery.

Being interviewed later, she said she had had enough of being groped and made a statement, not just for herself, but for all women. Outstanding. I wish one of the women the President groped yanked him to the ground as he walked away, maybe by the hair.

  3. I read the book “WE Bought a Zoo” by the journalist, Benjamin Mee, shortly after it was published in 2008. I remember the phrase : “Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage” that also included something about…”20 seconds of embarrassing bravery and something great will come of it.” The movie of the same title, that followed around 2011, differs greatly from the book. The movie moves along smoothly, the book did not. I will not elaborate because I don’t want to spoil the movie for those that haven’t seen it yet. Suffice it to say, it was one of the only times that I did not like the book better. I abandoned the book at a book swap. Thank-you!

    • Ellen, I did not read the book, but thanks for sharing your reaction. I can recall liking a movie better then the book once. I usually like Stephen King, but I read the book “Hearts of Atlantis” after seeing the terrific movie with Anthony Hopkins. Yet, I found out the movie stopped halfway through the book, leaving out the very bizarre parts. I actually stopped reading the book as it was a bridge too far after the movie. Keith
