Letter to Democrat Members of Congress

All, please consider sending the following to select Democrat Senators and representatives. Please feel free to reshape it to suit your needs and style. I feel the opportunity exists to make a deal to reopen the government.

As an independent voter who has belonged to both parties, I have been critical of the President for his lack of good faith bargaining and use of fear and misinformation to sell over-simplified solutions. I have also been critical of GOP Congressional members for not governing acquiescing to the President’s commands.

With this context, I ask you to use this opportunity with the packaged offer of the President to gain acceptable terms and re-open the government. I recognize fully this attempt by the President is more to deflect blame, but people are being hurt by the shutdown and it is time to act.

So, I beseech you to find terms that will be acceptable and make a deal. Tell Senator McConnell what could be added to make it acceptable. It is time. As this lingers further, more of the mud from this shutdown will rightfully get on on Democrats. Yes, the President caused this shutdown, but it takes two sides to have a communication problem.

  1. Note to Readers: Not surprisingly, but it is disappointing, the GOP Senators have caveated their bill to water down its impact. This confirms the bill is an attempt to shift blame, not solve a problem. The Senate Leader and President need to be held accountable for wasting what should have been a good faith effort. Nonetheless, the Democrats need to offer an option building off the general terms of the Trump offer, which they would find acceptable.

  2. Dear Keith,

There’s a deal to be had here. Today is D-day as the Senate led by the Maj Ldr Mitch McConnell attempts to pass 2 bills, one representing President’s vision and the other, representing side of DEMS. Both will likely not pass muster, but now is the time for Speaker Pelosi to present a plan which allows President Trump to save face but which sends message that DEMS are in favor of enhanced border security AND which ends this gov shutdown, immediately.

What I don’t want to see is President Trump getting the idea that he can use the threat of future shutdowns as a political weapon to be used over and over again.

    Hugs, Gronda

  3. Gronda, agreed. The time to act is now. To be frank, Trump did not want to go to Davos where he would have to answer tough questions, nor does he want to go in front of Congress as the leader of the shutdown. Dems are at fault too, but the lion’s share is on the President followed by Mitch McConnell. Keith
