Stupid question

Stupid question. If Trump wants to look presidential, why did he forego alerting us to the risk of COVID-19 back in January? That would have been leadership. Yet, when he could have told the truth forewarning us, he reverted to form to lie and downplay the risk. This is beyond poor stewardship. The truth seems to get lost in most Trump calculations.

Here is what a real leader might have said. “My fellow Americans, we need to prepare ourselves for a virus that will likely hit our shores. COVID-19 appears to spread easily.

I will establish a pandemic team comprised of public health and medical leadership. The purpose will be to work with state leadership to assess the needs of various hospitals and communities. I will engage with Congress to be ready to step in and help.

I hope and pray that this virus will be less problematic. But, we should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Thank you.”

If the current president had done that, his standing would have improved.

    • Roger, so true. To cover his initial lies, he has to blame someone. He has tried to whitewash that he never said things he said. But, this is modus operandi.Rather than tell the truth, he lies, lies some more, tries to change the lies and then blames others for his lies. I truly wish I was making this up, but this is how this corrupt person operates. Keith

  1. President Barack Obama would have said almost exactly those words, as would have most every president that came before. We do not have a president in this nation today … we have a person with the biggest ego of any I have known about, who cares not a whit for the people of this nation, but rather is only intent on his own purposes. And still … STILL some 40+% of the people in this country think he is the best thing to happen to the nation. I think the problem goes well beyond Trump … it speaks of the mentality of a large portion of the country. Sigh.

    • Jill, even the less eloquent presidents would know what to say. Trump has fooled many and they do not how badly he has taken advantage of them. Keith

  2. Have you seen the twitter post where Obama warns already back in 2014 to be prepared for a pandemic how we experience it worldwide today? And Trump says “Who could have known” these days. I don’t know if the link works but I share it.

    • Janis, you won’t find an argument here. My favorite description comes from conservative David Brooks who said “the Trump White House is equal parts chaos and incompetence.” Keith

  3. Note to Readers: Fans of The Family Circus comic series know there is a ghost character called “Not Me.” When the kids are asked who did a bad deed, they respond “Not Me.” I mention this as we have an unaccountable person in the White House. When asked who said or did the bad things we know he did, he blames it on that same ghost “Not Me.”

We expect this from a child, but hope the president would follow Harry Truman’s mantra instead instead of a toddler’s. Keith

  4. You’re right. Stupid question. Trump doesn’t understand leadership or presidential behavior. All he understands and all that he’s had to do previously was obfuscate, bully, and connive.
