One Republican Senator chastises other Republicans for their “madness”

There are a few voices in the Republican party who feel the need to speak out against the corruption of the outgoing president and those enabling him. In an article called “Mitt Romney tears into Republicans who are threatening to protest the Electoral College vote that will confirm Biden’s election victory” by Salar Shani of Business Insider, the Senator dies just that.

The article can be linked to below. Here a few paragraphs.

“Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah said it would be ‘madness’ for Republicans to protest the Electoral College vote set to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

‘Trying to get electors not to do what the people voted to do is madness,’ Romney said, according to NBC News.

Since the election, President Donald Trump’s campaign and some allied Republicans have waged lawsuits in multiple states seeking to overturn the results.

‘This is madness. We have a process, recounts are appropriate, going to the court is approp & pursuing every legal avenue is appropriate, but trying to get electors not to do what the people voted to do is madness,’ Frank Thorp V of NBC News quoted Romney as saying.

A representative for Romney confirmed his statement to Business Insider.”

It should be noted Romney uses the word “madness” twice to emphasize his point. I also liked that his representative confirmed the Senator’s statement.

Let me add that it is also a danger to our democracy and people who are getting death threats from the zealous members of the Trump base. These election officials, judges, governors, secretaries of state are the real heroes here, not the corrupt and deceitful person in the White House who has planned this cheating for six months.

Since Trump supporters will discount Romney’s opinion, how about the opinions of two attorneys who worked for Mr. Trump? Before the 2016 election Thomas Wells wrote “Donald Trump lies every day, even about things of no consequence.” And, his fixer Michael Cohen said under oath “Donald Trump is a racist, he is a con-artist and he is a cheat.”

I agree. Man-up Mr. Trump and admit you lost.

  1. Our thoughts are running parallel today! But then … this is all-consuming, so what other thoughts could we have in this time of angst? Good post, Keith … I’m proud of Senator Romney! One of the few who have found the courage to contradict the madman in the Oval Office. Back to the letter-writing to Senators and Representatives … not that it seems to be doing much good, but we have to try, yes?

    • Jill, we certainly must. I know these sheepish Senators are tired of hearing from me. I have left good messages thanking those who have spoken up, Romney, Kinzinger, Upton, Riggelman, and others who have at least supported the Biden win. Then there are those who are actively supporting the outgoing president’s fraud – Brooks, Cruz, Blount, Jordan, Johnson, Nunes, etc. To me, these folks are abetting a crime against the American people. Keith

      • That is something I haven’t done, and should … thank those who are doing the right thing. My hackles are raised again tonight by this idiotic lawsuit by Texas AG Ken Paxton, and the 106 republican representatives who are in support of overturning the voice of the people. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I vote we throw the whole lot of them out and force the GOP to start over, preferably with a platform and some values this time.

      • Jill, sadly with Trump getting so many votes and the GOP taking back a few seats in the House, they are more scared of Trump’s base. Keith

  2. Excuse me a simple Brit for asking this……..
Bbbbbuttt if that is the case, then should the same folk have protested about the Electoral College vote in 2016 because more voters chose Clinton than Trump?
Is that the smell of unwashed socks I detect from some parts of the Republican Party or is it just old fashioned hypocrisy?

    • Roger, Republicans are saying Democrats complained about Trump winning in 2016. Yes, they did, but they did not bring forth 50 frivolous lawsuits. Two things also should be noted. Trump was furious that Clinton got 3 million more votes than he did and he won. So, he said their were 5 million illegal votes and set up a commission at taxpayers’ expense to investigate. They found nothing irregular.

Also, we should not forget Trump refused to say he would be support the results of the 2016 election if he lost. He said “we’ll see.” If Trump had lost, would he have sued then like he is suing now? Since he is a highly litigious person, I would think yes, especially due to what he did with those 3 million more votes eating at his craw the Clinton got.

      Keith

      • One salutary lesson all peoples of all nations should learn is from the raw facts of their histories. For instance the Brexit attitude is not unusual in our history; however in this interlude we do not have the largest navy in the world nor our very own vast merchant marine to serve and protect our imperial interests.
With reference to the US when considering the antics of such groups as the ‘Know Nothings’ and then the ghastly surges of the KKK it is not surprising that eventually a shyster snake oil merchant such as Trump should float like bloated waste to the surface of the American body politic. That he is still supported much less tolerated is the warning all is not well.
To draw other parallels going back into our own time (long before the USA) kings who were deposed (one way or another) for being generally useless or inept or unpopular would still have their clutch of loyal supporters who made life difficult for the new guy. Henry IV had no end of trouble.
And to prove the followers of Trump have nothing on some folk I give you:

      • Roger, thanks. The outgoing president will not be treated well by history. Nor should he be. The truth matters. Decency matters. Fairness matters. None of these words come to mind to define the outgoing president. Keith

  3. Occasionally Keith, Romney shows a spine and that’s a good thing. I also saw John Kasich last night on Chris Cuomo and he was absolutely livid about the lack of courage from most Republicans. We sure need more of that!!!

  4. This is one of those unremarkable truths that we shouldn’t have to say out loud yet here we are telling the person who didn’t get enough electoral votes to win to accept the loss. I don’t know that Trump’s able to accept reality in any form. Now I just need some more GOP folks to support Romney and speak out against the coup attempt.
