GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney notes Republicans are at a ‘turning point’

I do not agree with several of the positions of Republican Representative Liz Cheney. Cheney, but she remains a hero to me and should to Americans and her own party, even though they are trying to oust her from her caucus leadership post. Why is she a hero? She is a truth teller in her party, but is getting vilified for daring to call out the former president for his untruthfulness and danger to our democracy. This sad affair speaks volumes about what is important in the party.

Cheney wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post which is reported on by Ben Leonard in an article called “Cheney doubles down in op-ed, says Republicans are at a ‘turning point (see below for a link).

Here a few paragraphs that give you the gist of her points.

“‘The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution,” the Wyoming Republican wrote in the op-ed. “History is watching. Our children are watching. We must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process’

In the op-ed, Cheney slammed Trump and said she would continue to do so ‘no matter what the short-term political consequences might be.

‘We must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process,’ Cheney wrote.

In the op-ed, she also called for Republicans to support the Justice Department’s investigations into the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol and renewed her calls for a bipartisan, 9/11-style fact-finding commission with subpoena power and no current members of Congress participating.

She also called on the party to move away from the ‘dangerous and anti-democratic Trump cult of personality.

It should be noted, the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal has defended Cheney and recommended she not be removed from her seat. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, a Trump supporter, also supported Cheney’s right to remain in her position. And, conservative pundit Michael Gerson even went further saying to be loyal to this kind of Republican party that would vilify truth tellers means leaders are either “suckers or liars.”

But, to me a question that I want answered by MAGA supporters and other Republicans who support Trump is the following. Liz Cheney and others have spoken out against the deceitful and seditious actions of the former president knowing they would be vilified and get death threats. Yet, they did it anyway and still are. Now, why would they do that? The answer is “political courage.”

  1. It’s time we were able to see whether her ‘courage’ in speaking out against Trump is having any measurable effect. If for instance any other member of either house is following her lead and admitting to Trump voters that he lost the election and that Biden is the rightful President. It’s only by getting the truth out there that the Republicans can recover any of their reputation.

    • David, true. See Linda’s last comment and my reply. The dam has been cracking, but more are stepping up. Once it breaks, the sycophants will be like rats jumping a sinking ship – sorry to mix metaphors. Keith

  2. Hello Keith. By Hook above hit on something true, Cheney has admitted she might run for president in 2024. How ever the interesting things from news reports is that Republicans are shooting themselves in the foot with females by attacking Cheney, a demographic they need to win elections. Seems women see this as the men like Romney getting off with just booing, and yet a woman 3rd in power getting tossed from her position for not following in lock step and supporting the male positions in supporting another top male. It really is hurting the Republicans with women. It seems McCarthy is so desperate to become speaker in 2022 even for a short time, he is willing to burn any hopes of winning the 2024 elections. Hugs

    • Scottie, that does not make her wrong, that just makes her politician. I have never met a perfect person or politician. Yet, she stood up and put her neck on the chopping block which takes courage. This is beyond politics – Trump and his zealots are a threat to our democracy. In my calls to reps and senators, I have been emphasizing my concerns that they let Trump’s lie fester way too long for which I blame Mitch McConnell the most. They let this lie convince people Trump was wronged. He was not. Just think of how he naysayed COVID and how that still impact vaccine usage. Same deal. Keith

  3. Yes, we were on the same page today! Some of my readers commented that it almost sounds as if Cheney is laying the groundwork for a presidential bid, perhaps in 2028, and … after pondering a bit, I think they could be right. I still applaud Cheney for keeping her integrity against the odds, but I’m also well aware that one right doesn’t cancel out all the wrongs from the past. It is a sad statement of what was once known as the “Grand Old Party” that they have sunken to the lowest of lows and that anybody with so much as an ounce of integrity doesn’t stand a chance within the party. I had read Gerson’s piece, but I wasn’t aware that Joni Ernst was standing behind Cheney. Good for her! Thanks for the shout out, my friend!

  4. I hear you loud and clear Keith and couldn’t agree more.
Kudos to her and the few others for speaking their truth. I applaud her and do hope others will grow some balls and join her!~ 🙏

    • Agreed. What is sad about all of this, the GOP sycophants know this, but choose to rationalize and lie to cover the deceitful and seditious actions of their boss. The question I have been asking GOP Senators and Representatives for three years is “What will you have to defend tomorrow or next week or next month?” the scary corollary question is “Do you even know if he has already committed the act you will have to defend?” When I first used that second question with a Senator, the former president had already had his “perfect phone call” with the Ukraine president, that his aides tried to bury. Keith

      • You pose wise questions Keith that seem so fundamentally simple with truth that fall on deaf ears and cover ups. It’s unfathomable to me but so are a lot of things!💖Happy Friday❣️

      • Cindy, thanks. To me, the former president’s deceitful and corrupt behavior is overt. Too many have tried to claim he is “only rough around the edges,” to be OK with his behavior, but he is far worse than rough around the edges. Keith

  5. Note to Readers II: Apparently, Cheney’s concerns about the blind loyalty to the former president is more than just supporting his election fraud lies and overlooking his role in the insurrection on the Capitol. She notes party leadership is not informing Congressional leaders that Trump is well underwater in favorability in key markets. Per an article in The Washington Post:

“When staff from the National Republican Congressional Committee rose to explain the party’s latest polling in core battleground districts, they left out a key finding about Trump’s weakness, declining to divulge the information even when directly questioned about Trump’s support by a member of Congress, according to two people familiar with what transpired.

Trump’s unfavorable ratings were 15 points higher than his favorable ones in the core districts, according to the full polling results, which were later obtained by The Washington Post. Nearly twice as many voters had a strongly unfavorable view of the former president as had a strongly favorable one.”

The article notes that this could hurt members of Congress, but that information is being hidden from them. So, in essence, Trump’ sycophants are keeping real news a secret as they push fake news to their own supporters who need real support.
