First, the whitewashing continues. Yesterday, I read Speaker Kevin McCarthy has agreed to have a vote asked for by two of the extreme GOP representatives – Elise Stefanik from New York and Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia – to expunge Donald J. Trump’s impeachment rulings in the House.
Second, a very conservative judge named J. Michael Luttig wrote a piece ripping the “spineless Republicans” still supporting Donald Trump. Here is a deeper paragraph where he lays blame for the Republican leadership’s acquiescence at their feet.
“In a word, the Republicans are as responsible as Mr. Trump for this month’s indictment — and will be as responsible for any indictment and prosecution of him for Jan. 6. One would think that, for a party that has prided itself for caring about the Constitution and the rule of law, this would stir some measure of self-reflection among party officials and even voters about their abiding support for the former president. Surely before barreling headlong into the 2024 presidential election season, more Republicans would realize it is time to come to the reckoning with Mr. Trump that they have vainly hoped and naïvely believed would never be necessary.“
For the full article, I have offered a link below to our friend Jill’s blog of yesterday.
Per McCarthy, Stefanik and Taylor Greene it is therefore OK to betray your country as president. They are and have been using buckets of paint that whitewashes the ugliness of the Trump presidency as if it never happened. The judge, like me, finds this offensive and, yes, spineless.
But, I think the judge’s paragraph of above should be studied. It is not just Trump who betrayed his country; it is those who are bending over backwards to cover for him. What simply amazes me is people support him even after it is obvious, he has done these things. Fox News settled two defamation cases for $1.1 billion and has a third one pending for $2.7 billion. Their crime – defaming three entities as they lied for the former president? As Pete Seeger once wrote, “When will they ever learn?”
Thank you so much for the shout-out and link, Keith! The path the Republicans are trying to lead us down ends in a very bad place and I find it depressing that so few in the party who calls itself the “party of law and order” care about the Constitution. This move to expunge Trump’s two impeachments is clearly unconstitutional, yet even the Speaker of the House has given it his thumbs-up. It’s like a slap in the face to the people of this nation, but nearly half the people seem to be enjoying it … that disturbs me greatly. Thanks again … together maybe we are making a difference.
Jill, thanks. The former president may (and likely deserves to) end up in prison. This latest recording where he is in on audio committing a crime of espionage for sharing classified information, after denying he did this, is just one more thing. You would think things like Fox News admitting they gaslit their viewers and settling two of three defamation lawsuits lying for the former president would make a difference.
Fox has paid $1.1 billion thus far with a $2.7 billion pending in the third defamation case. That is a lot of coin because they flew too close to the Trump sun.
Keith
PS – Speaking of Kevin McCarthy, we should not forget he was waiting to take the Speaker’s reins when John Boehner retired. But, he noted in an interview the endless Benghazi hearings were designed to discredit Hillary Clinton, not get at the truth. His Speakership was shelved and Paul Ryan was asked to do it. This is modus operandi of the person.
While I fully agree he deserves a reservation behind bars for at least the rest of his life, my bet is that he will never see the inside of a prison cell. He is saying that the latest recording is actually his “exoneration”, though I have no clue where he’s getting that notion from! While I would love to see him spend the rest of his life in prison, right now I’ll settle for disqualifying him from running next year! That’s not too much to ask, is it?
Jill, you should know better than believe what Donald Trump says is in close proximity to the truth. We should only remember all of his boasts, in essence, which say his excrement has no odor. I mean the person turned the economy around in one day when sworn in. Amazing. Keith
Note to Readers: Just in case people are wondering why the judge felt the need to speak out, here is the latest word from Speaker McCarthy per an interview with Breitbart:
“Kevin McCarthy says Trump ‘stronger today than in 2016’ hours after doubting his ability to win. Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy has insisted that Donald Trump is ‘stronger today than he was in 2016’, hours after he appeared to question whether the former president was the strongest GOP nominee to win the 2024 election.”
I would encourage Republicans to pay attention to the judge and not politicians like this who are scared of Trump’s shadow. Spineless is an apt description of McCarthy and other sycophants. Keith
You wonder why there are those who are bending over backwards to cover for him? To me, it’s pretty clear. To them, he is INNOCENT. It’s “the others” (Democrats) who are out to “get him” by making up stories and using vague laws to make him look bad.
Of course, those in the political field are simply hanging onto his coattails in hopes they will eventually benefit from his notoriety. But the average folk that support him? They have simply been bamboozled.
Nan, thanks for your comment. I am not sure all of his sycophants think he is innocent. I am sure the strident MAGA crowd do, but there are some who know he is guilty but just don’t want to have to deal with it, in my view. To me, they are the worst kind of sycophants. Keith
I guess the Republicans just don’t mind losing their party to madness, to anarchy, to ignorance and hate. What a sad low they’ve stooped to. I’m so glad the Orangatan ran on the GOP ticket. I heard that some time earlier he had considered running as a Dem.
Linda, the GOP has sunk to a new low. Trump was a Democrat for a long time. He chose to run as a Republican setting the stage with his Birther BS about Obama. I believe he felt he could fit right in with a group that was losing attachment with the truth. He was recruited by Roger Ailes, head of Fox News, and offered the network’s full support. Keith
