A brief message to Republican elected officials

With the latest and perhaps most detailed charges against the former US president and eighteen of his collaborators, I am long past weary of too many Republican elected officials telling their constituents that the system is out to get Donald Trump. There is only one constant in this equation – he is the guy who has earned this scrutiny. He is the guy who looks back at the former president from the mirror when he shaves.

I have shared the following theme with staff of several of these elected officials. The message they need to impart is simple. “These are serious charges against the former president. We must get to the bottom of this.”

Truly, there is nothing more to say. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy was blaming Joe Biden yesterday, but it should be noted these charges came from Georgia, not the federal government. And, another set of charges earlier in the year are from New York. Even at the federal level, the Justice department is independent of the White House.

The other message I add to the staff is if we find the former president guilty of any of these charges, we cannot have him in the White House. Full stop. There are other reasons that the Republican Party may want to move in another direction away from Trump, but that requires more space to define them.

Some people may not like this, but that is what this independent and former Republican and Democrat voter thinks.

  1. You’re quite right Keith. those official should also realise that the electorate have long memories and will take it out on anyone who lies to them in future. Time to coe in out of the ply area and get down to some serious work now while there’s still an ouside chance of saving the planet. Hugs

    • David, many thanks. You are right about saving the planet. We can ill-afford four more years of a naysayer like Trump in the White House. We already lost four years due to him and eight years due to George W. Bush. Keith

  2. Note to Readers: I posted a variation of the following as a comment on another blog:

While innocent until proven guilty, we should not forget a few recent court cases involving the former president. Per several articles in reliable sources:

    – Trump was found liable for defamation and sexual misconduct owing $5 million to E. Jean Carroll, which held up in appeal. It should be noted that his court case for defamation against Carroll was thrown out with the judge saying there was sufficient evidence that Trump met a broader definition of rape. He may be facing a second defamation case due his badmouthing Carroll again at a televised speaking event. Defaming her again was unwise.
    – Trump’s company was found guilty of tax fraud being fined $1.6 million with his CFO going to jail. I remember his earlier response that he knew more about taxes than anyone, even in the history of taxes. In this case, he overstated his competence.
    – Trump settled a court case where he used his Foundation funds for personal benefit having to repay $1.6 million to the trust, before it was disbanded and monies distributed to charities with no one named Trump allowed to oversee that process. Plus, Trump boardmembers were ordered to undergo philanthropic training. One of Trump’s many shortcomings is he views all money associated with his name as his money whether it is foundation or campaign money.

That brings us to the four current court cases where it looks like some pretty good cases have been built against him and other collaborators.

    • Doubtful. One is addressing specific actions to change the Georgia results. I try not to pay attention to all of the what-ifs as it can drive you crazy. In my view, pseudo news folks are looking for ratings. We should just let it all play out. At least that is what I intend to do. Keith

  3. This elevation of Trump by one group in the light of his many misdemeanours, crimes and lack of moral compass is certainly in the status of a cult.
It requires a mobilisation of many strands of society who are repelled by this concern through the democratic and legal processes lest the cult’s excesses tear the USA apart

      • Quite so Keith.
The infuriating thing is that should he be found guilty and imprisoned he and the cult around him will play the Martyr / Imprisoned For His Beliefs / Socialist State cards for all they worth.
An example of ‘The Stacked Deck’

PS: WP refused to accept my ‘like’ to your post and then wouldn’t send the PS about that issue’ It’s very quirky these days

      • Roger, he is fundraising off the martyr card getting donors to pay for his legal fees. He likes using other people’s money. It will go down in history as one of the biggest con jobs. Keith

  4. Like you, I am sick and tired of hearing that this is ‘political persecution’ or a ‘witch hunt’. Crimes were committed, the proof is in the pudding, and the Republicans need to shut up. I read this morning that a woman was arrested for threatening to kill Judge Chutkan and others. This is a direct result of the lies and rhetoric by the likes of Lindsey Graham, Kevin McCarthy, and nearly every Republican in Congress.

    • Jill, I left a message this morning with Senator Mitch McConnell, Rep. Steve Scalise one of my Senators (Thom Tillis) to be leaders and condemn the violence. We need more level headed Republican Senators and Representatives to say these are serious charges and we need to get to the bottom of them. There is nothing nefarious going on other than what the former president is accused of. Too many Republicans are believing the former president. Keith

      • If only everyone would do the same, if they were bombarded with calls asking them to be the adults in the room, perhaps they would listen. Thumbs up to you for trying, my friend! I have emailed my Representative, Warren Davidson, so much that I’m sure he rolls his eyes every time he hears my name! And nothing changes …

      • Jill, I hear you. I am probably on a watch list. This is why others need to flood them with calls. Thanks again, Keith

  5. This current version of the GOP has taken a stand to back their cult leader — as per Roger’s comment. If they want to survive as a legitimate political party, they need to clean house. I don’t think they can do it. They are All In, with a 9 high hand. No straights or flushes possible where they might have the high card.
(I made a typo I like. I said they need a clean hose, preferably a fire hose, with so much pressure behind it no one there can hang on.) I think they are dead in the Sargasdo Sea!

  6. Note to Readers II: Per Reuters, “a prominent U.S. Senate Republican on Sunday said former President Donald Trump should drop out of the 2024 Republican White House race, arguing that Trump cannot win a general election contest against Democratic President Joe Biden.

Senator Bill Cassidy, one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump at the former president’s second impeachment trial in 2021, described a federal documents case against Trump as ‘almost a slam dunk’ and warned that voters would not elect someone convicted of a crime as president.”

One by one, more Republican elected officials are beginning to speak the truth about Donald J. Trump. Let’s hope this case of courage is contagious.
