Tuesday’s Gone with the wind this December day

Four weeks ago, the American election was officially held. Yesterday, the last two of the six states the outgoing president contested “certified” their election results for a Joe Biden win. The losing candidate has done his best Lesley Gore impersonation (thanks Roger) saying repeatedly “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.” Yet, his conspiratorial claims don’t seem to be fairing too well in court, winning only one case out of close to 40 cases now. Judges have even written scathing criticisms of the lack of evidence and frivolous claims.

The title of this post is based on a Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Tuesday’s Gone.” Since elections are officially held on Tuesday in America, four weeks later this title and its key chorus define the status of the incumbent’s presidency – like Tuesday, it is gone with the wind.

Yet, these ongoing failures have not stopped the conspiracy minded, outgoing president and his sycophants to beat on that drum the he won and the election was stolen. There is a receptive audience, and has been all along, to his inability to be truthful to any degree and his inability to accept criticism or failure. His fans love that he attacks people with name calling and smug of-course-everyone-knows-I-am-right sales schtick.

Sadly, election officials, Secretaries of State, Governors, Judges, etc., many of whom are Republicans, who have remembered their oaths and done their jobs admirably, have been receiving death threats from wound-too-tight Trump supporters. Chris Krebs, the former cybersecurity professional for DHS who is on a lengthy list of people who Trump has fired or run off for disagreeing with the president, appeared on “60 Minutes” and very credibly told his story of why the election was the safest and most secure.

Today, an attorney on Trump’s campaign said Krebs should be taken outside and shot. Really? I won’t mention his name, but the attorney proceeded to repeat the BS claims the outgoing president has been ranting about that election officials, Governors and Judges have consistently ruled against. As Krebs noted, 95% of the votes have paper back-up, so the recounts and audits reveal the initial math was correct.

The Trump modus operandi is not to argue points, it is to name call, denigrate and lie about the critic. Yet, death threats toward anyone, much less very credible public servants, is well beyond the pale. The outgoing president foments this stuff, then hides saying he never told people to say that. He fired Sidney Powell from his legal team, but still parrots her conspiracy BS. He needed a scapegoat as even Trump supporting Republicans in leadership were saying his legal team was a joke.

I have long watched Trump, even before he was president. Credibility is a word that does not come to mind when thinking of attributes. I watched and read of the GOP and Democrat support for Krebs – he came off as highly credible and someone who cares about getting it right. The outgoing president does not give a damn about getting it right, as winning is all that matters.

Mr. Trump, you can channel your inner Lesley Gore all you want, but you lost because you got fewer votes. That is how this stuff works.

One more court win than a dead man has

The outgoing US president continues to claim wide-scale voter fraud without proof and does so in a smug, of-course-everyone-knows, fashion. Apparently everyone does not know this, in particular, many Republican election officials, Secretaries of State, a Homeland Security election cybersecurity official and judges (even Trump appointed judges) who disagree.

Yet, what the outgoing president fails to broadcast to his followers, is out of about three dozen court cases claiming voter fraud, he has won the grand total of one small case, that threw out a few hundred votes. If you are counting, that is one more court win than a dead man has.

From an article called “In Harsh Rebuke, Appeals Court Rejects Trump’s Election Challenge in Pennsylvania” by Alan Feuer of The New York Times, the following paragraphs sum up what the vast other court cases are telling the outgoing president.

“In a blistering decision, a Philadelphia appeals court ruled on Friday that the Trump campaign could not stop — or attempt to reverse — the certification of the voting results in Pennsylvania, reprimanding the president’s team by noting that ‘calling an election unfair does not make it so.

The 21-page ruling by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals was a complete repudiation of Mr. Trump’s legal effort to halt Pennsylvania’s certification process and was written by a judge that he himself appointed to the bench. ‘Free, fair elections are the lifeblood of our democracy,’ Judge Stephanos Bibas wrote on behalf of the appeals court in a unanimous decision. ‘Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.’

‘Voters, not lawyers, choose the president,” the court declared at one point. “Ballots, not briefs, decide elections.’The court accused the Trump campaign of engaging in “repetitive litigation” and pointed out that the public interest strongly favored ‘counting every lawful voter’s vote, and not disenfranchising millions of Pennsylvania voters who voted by mail.’”

I am truly sorry to have to continue to write these posts on the petulant, dishonest and dishonorable acts of someone in a leadership position. The fact this person is saying these things is disappointing, but not surprising, since, that is his nature and he has planned to do this for six months, if he lost.

What is most disappointing is only a small few Republican so-called leaders have called out the outgoing president’s fraud. What is also disappointing, because of the staging over the last six months and predicted posturing on election night, for which announcers criticized him, his followers believe these fraudulent statements by this petulant person.

So, please forgive my posts sharing these court cases and ongoing concerns about this person. I will not be content until the president-elect is sworn in. Unfortunately, the person has forever tainted far too many voters who actually believe what this most corrupt and deceitful president in my lifetime says and tweets.

A note to a friend who is a Trump fan

I know you are an ardent Trump fan and I applaud your passion. Yet, numerous Republican election officials, even Trump appointees, have said on the record there was no widespread voter fraud. And. Trump has lost about two dozen court cases, winning only one small case that tossed a few votes. Biden won because he got more votes in states where it mattered most. Trump has staged this voter fraud issue for over six months, so what he is doing is predictable, alarming and harmful to our country. I expect you will disagree with me, and that is fine, but I wanted you to know I have major concerns. That is what this old fart thinks. That and $2 will get you a cup of coffee.

To the point

The petulant acting president has told his people to not share COVID-19 data with the staff appointed by the president-elect. We are talking about people’s lives and the president is still throwing a tantrum with unfounded claims of wide-spread fraud, claims which he has orchestrated and staged for several months.

Let me come right to the point. This is the first president to not put country first to facilitate an orderly transition. It matters not if the president is still contending the election with or without merit. You still plan ahead to help people. It is that simple.

But, let me be brutally frank. Watching this president over the years, during his first campaign, and during his presidency, his interests have invariably superseded those of the country’s. He cannot help himself as it is in his narcissistic nature. So, doing what is necessary to help people is not in his thought pattern.

As conservative pundit David Brooks said the past year, “the president does not have any empathy or sense of decency.” There are many negative metaphors to draw from, but to me, having pep rallies with his most ardent fans in February without warning them of the risk (after admitting to knowing of the dangers of the coronavirus), is beyond the pale. He put his most loyal followers in danger without their knowledge.

Yet, if that is too subtle, picture Trump tossing paper towels to Puerto Ricans ravaged by a hurricane following his relative disdain to helping them. It was condescending as if it were a king throwing food scraps to hungry people.

Breathe in, breathe out, repeat

Not much to do these days, but let conscientious election officials do their jobs and complete their counts. A key way out of this mess is to follow procedures. The minute procedures are not followed, then it becomes chaotic (and more political). It should be noted one of the contenders has a modus operandi of sowing chaos and not being very truthful in the process. I will let you determine which one.

So, follow me. Find a reflective, meditative pose. Or, do your normal workout routine, be it Yoga, Pilates, spinning, walking, running, etc. Breathe in, breathe out, repeat. The only thing to deliver us from chaos is doing normal things that we enjoy doing.

Back to that chaos sower, quite simply, counting people’s votes is essential to our democracy. The folks on the ground in the election process are dutiful, conscientious and trying to get it right. Stopping the count serves no purpose and gains no new knowledge.

If the president (or the former VP) do not like the results that are close, there are measures in each state to follow to ask for a recount. Some small margins may dictate a recount per state law. If at that time, the president or former VP want to bring lawsuit, then that is their right.

Senator Mitch McConnell noted that lawsuits are not uncommon defending the president’s efforts. That is true, but what McConnell failed to mention is the president is suing to stop the process. This is after he has staged this course for over six months. What the president is doing is not a surprise at all and was expected. I wish the president would take this much effort to actually govern than campaign.

At the heart of the stopping push is the president does not want the tallies to indicate he lost. My guess is his fragile ego cannot handle that and he feels like his legal battle is more uphill if he is on the bottom. No judge worth any salt will stop a normal process from occurring. Of course, we do have a president who acts abnormally.

So, what can we do about? Breathe in, breathe out. Repeat.
