“This is not an America I recognize” says Republican Chris Krebs

In an article by Josh Feldman of Media-ite called “Chris Krebs Pleads With His Fellow Republicans to Push Back on Election Conspiracies: ‘This is Not an America I Recognize,’” Krebs testimony at the Senate Homeland Security hearing led by Chair Ron Johnson (R), his words are telling. Here are a few paragraphs.

Chris Krebs, the former DHS top cyber official who President Donald Trump fired after he publicly and repeatedly debunked election misinformation, pleaded with his fellow Republicans during Wednesday’s Senate hearing to quit spewing conspiracies.

While more Republicans have started to acknowledge Joe Biden won the election, a significant number of them are still digging in on the president’s baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.

The hearing Wednesday comes in the wake of judge after judge — including ones appointed by the president — completely rejecting the fraud claims brought by the Trump legal team and other allies. The Supreme Court shot down two separate cases just last week.

But with Republicans continuing to indulge in the president’s claims, Krebs made a point of sending a message to his party:

‘I think it’s, again, an affront to democracy that the citizens of the United States of America that are responsible for executing this sacred democratic institution of elections are being threatened on a daily basis. I mean, you name it, whether it’s emails, it’s phone calls, whether it’s people showing up at your house. This is not an America I recognize. And it’s got to stop. We need everyone across — through the leadership ranks to step up. I would appreciate more support from my own party, the Republican party, to call this stuff out and end it’.”

‘We’ve got to move on. We have a President-elect, Krebs said.”

To be frank, I am tired of talking about this. The question that must be asked, is it easier to believe there is a vast voter fraud conspiracy which would include many Republican (even Trump appointed) election officials, governors, secretaries of state, judges, the US Attorney General, head of election cybersecurity and election leaders OR is it easier to believe a person well documented as being untruthful, long before being president, is lying yet one more time, especially after staging for six months the fraud claims?

This independent and former Republican voter sees the outgoing president as threat to national security as he endangers our democracy and people, many of whom are hard working Republicans just trying to do their job. It is time for Mr. Trump to concede after failing to prove voter fraud while losing 58 out of 59 court cases. Plus, the recounts confirm the voter tallies and that he lost.

Let’s follow Krebs closing words above. “We’ve got to move on.”

Lesley Gore’s chorus serves as White House background music

“It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to
Cry if I want to
You would cry too, if it happened to you.”

Now that the Electoral College has done their job, Republican Senators are falling in line. It has taken much too long for the leaders to begin to say grace over the Joe Biden/ Kamala Harris win. These actions will assure the Biden/ Harris transition, as Senate Majority Leader is encouraging no further boat rocking as he does not want to have to take a vote that would be viewed as against the outgoing president.

Yet, you know statements like these are eating at the craw of the outgoing president. As I was sharing with Erika and Jill in comments, the outgoing president likely believes his own BS about the election being stolen due to the echo chamber he participates in. The outgoing president (let’s call him OP) says or repeats something, the conspiracy theorists seize upon it and give it backstory, the pseudo news people echo and report on it, and then OP hears them talking about it and begins to believe his own story. It is a circular rumor bouncing around the echo chamber.

It has never been a surprise OP is doing what he is doing. It is in his DNA with his shallow ego, so he cannot admit he lost. “I won the election and it was stolen from me,” he thinks and says. But, he sells it even more, saying “I won BY A LOT.” Yet, what is underreported is he staged this fraudulent claim for six months.

What has been a surprise is the level and breadth of sycophancy of Republican leaders, except for a few, who actually called him out with variations of some criticism. OP has purposefully misled Americans, once again, to save how he is perceived. As a result, the MAGA crowd is buying his BS. The fact OP cannot convince judges seems to be mere distraction to them. The fact election officials have recounted and pushed back on OP is irrelevant to them. The fact many of these folks pushing bsck or ruling against the claims of voter fraud are Republicans, with some appointed by OP, means they are disloyal.

Disloyal to whom? The US Constitution? I think not. They are not even being disloyal to OP. They are doing their jobs. They are remembering their oaths. And, some are dealing with OP instigated harassment and death threats. So, OP can cry all he wants to, but just like with Lesley Gore, Johnny is not coming back to her and OP will no longer be president after Joe Biden is sworn in.

Tuesday’s Gone with the wind this December day

Four weeks ago, the American election was officially held. Yesterday, the last two of the six states the outgoing president contested “certified” their election results for a Joe Biden win. The losing candidate has done his best Lesley Gore impersonation (thanks Roger) saying repeatedly “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.” Yet, his conspiratorial claims don’t seem to be fairing too well in court, winning only one case out of close to 40 cases now. Judges have even written scathing criticisms of the lack of evidence and frivolous claims.

The title of this post is based on a Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Tuesday’s Gone.” Since elections are officially held on Tuesday in America, four weeks later this title and its key chorus define the status of the incumbent’s presidency – like Tuesday, it is gone with the wind.

Yet, these ongoing failures have not stopped the conspiracy minded, outgoing president and his sycophants to beat on that drum the he won and the election was stolen. There is a receptive audience, and has been all along, to his inability to be truthful to any degree and his inability to accept criticism or failure. His fans love that he attacks people with name calling and smug of-course-everyone-knows-I-am-right sales schtick.

Sadly, election officials, Secretaries of State, Governors, Judges, etc., many of whom are Republicans, who have remembered their oaths and done their jobs admirably, have been receiving death threats from wound-too-tight Trump supporters. Chris Krebs, the former cybersecurity professional for DHS who is on a lengthy list of people who Trump has fired or run off for disagreeing with the president, appeared on “60 Minutes” and very credibly told his story of why the election was the safest and most secure.

Today, an attorney on Trump’s campaign said Krebs should be taken outside and shot. Really? I won’t mention his name, but the attorney proceeded to repeat the BS claims the outgoing president has been ranting about that election officials, Governors and Judges have consistently ruled against. As Krebs noted, 95% of the votes have paper back-up, so the recounts and audits reveal the initial math was correct.

The Trump modus operandi is not to argue points, it is to name call, denigrate and lie about the critic. Yet, death threats toward anyone, much less very credible public servants, is well beyond the pale. The outgoing president foments this stuff, then hides saying he never told people to say that. He fired Sidney Powell from his legal team, but still parrots her conspiracy BS. He needed a scapegoat as even Trump supporting Republicans in leadership were saying his legal team was a joke.

I have long watched Trump, even before he was president. Credibility is a word that does not come to mind when thinking of attributes. I watched and read of the GOP and Democrat support for Krebs – he came off as highly credible and someone who cares about getting it right. The outgoing president does not give a damn about getting it right, as winning is all that matters.

Mr. Trump, you can channel your inner Lesley Gore all you want, but you lost because you got fewer votes. That is how this stuff works.

Georgia’s second recount confirms Biden win

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am truly tired of writing about an outgoing president whose fragile ego cannot and will not tolerate that he lost the election. Yet, after seeing excerpts from his petulant Thanksgiving Day news conference, he is still banging on that drum that there was wild-scale fraud of over “100,000 or more “votes in many states.

Since that time, he lost yet another appellate court case, where a Trump appointed judge wrote a scathing rebuke of the lack of evidence. If you read between the lines, the judge said stop wasting the court and people’s time with unsubstantiated claims.

On Saturday, the Georgia recount was finished for the second time whose results confirmed Joe Biden won that state. A few paragraphs from the following article called “The Republican Secretary of State for Georgia says Trump ‘should leave quietly’ after state’s election recount confirmed Biden’s win” by Sophia Ankel of Business Insider are telling.

Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said President Trump ‘should leave quietly,’ after the state’s election recount confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

‘When you lose an election, you should leave quietly. It’s the will of the people that has been expressed,’ he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an article published on Saturday.

Raffensperger has found himself the subject of intense criticism by the Trump campaign after Georgia turned blue for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Earlier this week, President Trump called Raffensperger ‘an enemy of the people’ and accused him, without evidence, of hiding “tens of thousands” of illegal votes.

Three things are crystal clear and consistent about the actions of the outgoing president.

1. He will do anything, and I mean anything, to avoid losing. Michael Cohen, his attorney/ fixer said under oath to Congress, “Donald Trump is a racist, he is a con-artist and he is a cheat.” His niece said he will burn it all down to avoid losing.

2. He has habit of firing people or denigrating them if they tell truths that run counter to his lies. Chris Krebs, will appear on “60 Minutes” tonight. Krebs was fired from his election cybersecurity role for Homeland Security as he noted this was the most secure election in our history. Krebs joins a long line of Inspectors General, diplomats, staff, etc. who have been thrown under the bus by the outgoing president.

3. Trump fans wield the backing of the outgoing president by making death threats to people who are doing their jobs the best they can. Many of those under attack are Republicans, but they have the misfortune of telling truths the outgoing president does not like.

Yet, as I have said time and again, the actions of this outgoing president are disappointing and scary, but not a surprise. He has planned and staged his fraud claims for months. Plus, as many have noted in biographies and news stories, it is in his nature to win at all costs. The fact people’s lives are being threatened reveals just how dangerous following the words of this deceitful and corrupt acting person can be.

A most undemocratic action

In an Associated Press article called “Mitt Romney on Trump: ‘It is difficult to imagine a worse, more undemocratic action by a sitting American President’” please note the following paragraphs:

“Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, one of Trump’s most vocal GOP critics, tweeted Thursday, ‘It is difficult to imagine a worse, more undemocratic action by a sitting American President.’

Romney accused Trump on resorting to ‘overt pressure on state and local officials to subvert the will of the people and overturn the election.’

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., went after Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who held a press conference Thursday presenting a list of far-fetched, thoroughly debunked claims on the 2020 election.

In a statement, Sasse said:’Rudy and his buddies should not pressure electors to ignore their certification obligations under the statute. We are a nation of laws, not tweets.'”

Other than Republican Senator Lamar Alexander and a few GOP Congress people and governors, most Republican incumbents have been silent or offer some cautious support of the outgoing president. Former Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Bob Corker have been outspoken in their criticism holding no punches. Yet, per Mark Shields on PBS Newshour, it is interesting that the news show “Meet the Press” could not get any sitting Republican Senators to come on the show last Sunday.

This is telling, but is also sad. We have a petulant outgoing president who continues to claim wide-spread voter fraud without evidence, legal success, or sense of right and wrong. We need to thank Senators and others who speak out. We also need to remind the silent ones to what they swore an oath to – the US constitution.

The following is a letter I posted on the websites of three GOP Senators who are stating their concerns.

“Senator, too few Senators from my former party are publicly stating what they know privately. Thank you for your courage to speak up and be critical of the claims of wide-spread fraud by the outgoing president. Unfortunately, he has sown seeds of doubt and his followers do not know he has lost about two dozen court cases winning only a small one that tossed a few votes, that Republican officials have stated on the record there is no wide-spread fraud, that he fired Chris Krebs because he said the election was secure and what he is doing was predicted and unsurprising as he has orchestrated this over the last six months. He is endangering a peaceful transition of power and per his niece, she said her uncle will burn it all down to avoid losing. I appreciate your efforts to not let him burn down our democracy.”
