Bye, Bye, Bye

An article in The Guardian by Edward Helmore called. “Record number of Americans seeking UK residency, says Home Office,” reminds me on an old NSYNC songtitle – “Bye, Bye, Bye.” The subheading raises the alarm bell: “Nearly 2,000 applications for British citizenship submitted since January, when Donald Trump took office.”

Here are the first few paragraphs to frame the story:

“During the 12 months leading up to March, more than 6,000 US citizens have applied to either become British subjects or to live and work in the country indefinitely – the highest number since comparable records began in 2004, according to data released on Thursday by the UK’s Home Office.

Over the period, 6,618 Americans applied for British citizenship – with more than 1,900 of the applications received between January and March, most of which has been during the beginning of Donald Trump’s second US presidency.

The surge in applications at the start of 2025 made that the highest number for any quarter on record.”

In the big scheme of things these are small numbers. Yet, the trend is telling. And, likely still growing. I can hear the incumbent president’s reaction without actually hearing the words. Take it to the bank, it will be some form of good riddance. The departing ones will likely retort “Bye, Bye, Bye.”

It would be interesting to see other migrations to places like Canada or other countries. My guess is those numbers are up too.
