Monday Meanderings pre-election

Please go vote tomorrow if you have not done so already. Remember there are some who do not want you to vote and have done and are still doing their earnest to prevent your vote from counting. This is being done through voter restrictions, lawsuits and intimidation all fueled by a former president who has lied because he is not man enough to admit he lost an election.

Per his niece Mary, this is what she meant when she said “Her uncle will burn it all down to avoid losing an election.” This is what is meant when Michael Cohen, his attorney and fixer for years, said under oath to Congress, “Donald Trump is a racist, he is a con-artist and he is cheat.” This is what is meant when Trump’s own Attorney General said to the then president’s face, “your election claims of fraud are bulls**t.”

I have known for the longest time, well before his presidency, that Trump was a deceitful acting and bullying person. I also knew two months before the election in 2020 that Trump would claim election fraud. What I did not know is how so many sycophants in legislatures and pseudo news rooms would go along with this BS after it was long ago proven his claims were unjustified.

So, we have people who have seized upon this BS and said everything is still rigged against Republicans. After the voters suppression and gerrymandering that began in earnest after the 2010 midterm when Republicans took majorities in state legislatures, the statement things are rigged against the GOP is sad and laughable.

Please vote. I have observed already when a party is forced to or accepts a Big Lie, small lies are much easier to state. I voted for three bipartisan Republicans, but the rest of my votes have been for Democrats. Democrats are not perfect, but at least they are addressing real issues whether you like what they have done or not. If a Republican touts the Big Lie, please do not vote for them, as they will lie about anything – what is and isn’t.

  1. Note to Readers: One of the bigger small lies is to lay blame for inflation at the feet of any president. The economy is much bigger than any president can control, although they can provide headwinds or tailwinds. Inflation is due to a variety of reasons, but a couple of factors relate to a restricted supply which began with the tariffs under Trump and supply disruption. So, Trump deserves some blame if we are going to lump it onto Biden as well.

  2. Good post, my friend. My jaw drops at the number of election deniers on the ballot, and even more so at the number of people who enthusiastically support them. I think there is something seriously wrong with the mental health of this nation.

  3. Note to Readers: What is interesting is how the Republican voters do not seem to care or choose not to believe the former president may be charged with seditious acts on top of his company facing both civil and criminal tax fraud cases. From meddling with election results in Georgia to taking classified documents to an unsecure location to inciting and facilitating an insurrection on the Capitol, he may be soon charged. In my view, it would not be surprising if he was.

  4. This is a poignant, heart twisting post to read Keith, because the America I grew up knowing would have been mostly unlikely to have allowed a brazen loudmouth with no political experience near the nomination run-offs. Even worse that in bygone decades his antics both in office and particularly during the 2020 election would have had him caste out of the Party circle and generally decried by the Republican base.
That The USA should have fallen so low in its political acumen to allow this creature to be considered as running in 2024 is very sad indeed.
Let us hope for a turn around in reflection in the ranks, there maybe if a BBC news broadcast with a republican activist on the door step in something to go. Not so much was said, but what was not said.
    Best wishes
    Roger

    • Roger, many thanks. We should not forget that this country has tolerated and even raised up such unscrupulous folks like Senator McCarthy, to an extent that even President Dwight Eisenhower would not condemn him. When we look back at one of our finest moments, it occurred when Congress made Richard Nixon become accountable for his crimes. This is why we cannot allow another populist like Trump not be held to account. He likes to call this a witch hunt – if so, then he must a damn witch, because he needs to be held accountable. Keith

      • McCarthy was brought down:
Welch’s famous “Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, Sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”
And Ed Murrow’s ‘See It Now’
And at least in those days folk woke up and McCarthy’s support evaporated rapidly.
And in similar fashion when the game was upon with Nixon most support went, particularly on ‘The Hill’
And yet Trump can still be seen to run for President?
There is something radically wrong with one of the mindsets in the USA.

“He likes to call this a witch hunt – if so, then he must a damn witch, because he needs to be held accountable.”
Well said Keith. Well said indeed. You have nailed him there.
Best wishes and take care my good friend.

      • Roger, well remembered and postulated. Politics in America is like rival football teams. Win at all costs, so it seems. Yet, unlike football the game is not over when the whistle blows to determine the victor. The fans can still lose big. Keith

  5. Perhaps it’s mass hypnosis. I wonder what the cure for that is. (I did vote early, (at the Elections Office). You’ve done your good job for the cause. Thanks, no matter how it all ends up.
