St. Paul and an all female city council

The city of St. Paul, Minnesota has elected an all female city council. It is a racially diverse group of women who do not appear to be the same age as our two leading presidential candidates – not even close.

I commend the city for being forward thinking. For those who might complain about the make-up, I would offer it is not like having more men than women produces good governance – think the US House of Representatives that would NOT be confused with being an exemplar.

Per a US News report article from January,

“‘We’re a multifaith, multicultural group of women. Our professional experiences are what people trusted as much as our personal ones. … And we have a clear policy vision that we got elected on,’ (Mitra) Jalali said in an interview.

All seven women are under 40 years old, and six out of the seven are women of color. From civil engineering to nonprofit directing, they have a wide range of professional experiences, which Jalali said helps capture the city’s diversity.“

St. Paul is a city of about 300,000. From its website, the councilmembers include;

  • “Ward 1. Anika Bowie, Councilmember. vacant, Legislative Aide. …
  • Ward 2. Rebecca Noecker, Councilmember. Taina Maki, Legislative Aide. …
  • Ward 3. Saura Jost, Councilmember. …
  • Ward 4. Mitra Jalali, Council President. …
  • Ward 5. HwaJeong Kim, Council Vice President. …
  • Ward 6. Nelsie Yang, Councilmember. …
  • Ward 7. Cheniqua Johnson, Councilmember.”

Well done. I love the diversity and youthful zeal of the group. Best wishes to good governance. Maybe, just maybe, there will be NO zero-sum political games which permeate Washington and state capitols.
