There are many times I feel we need to return to kindergarten for some key lessons in behavior. These poor teachers have to deal with five-year-olds in larger numbers than a regular day care class would contain. The rules of behavior are likely written on the walls in large colored print and repeated often as a mantra and when needed.

With too many folks following the lead of childish acting politicians (we all know who they are and even their fans know), we have lost the ability to have civil discourse and amicably disagree. So, class, let’s join together with Ms. Johnson or Ms. Jones or Mr. Thompson and repeat the following:

Treating others like you want to be treated is often called a Golden Rule

Threatening folks who disagree with you is not good behavior, nor is it wise

Promoting violence to resolve perceived or real problems is unlawful

Rationalizing lies is the same as lying – sometimes these folks are worse as we know the liar is lying

Denigrating classes of people because they seem different is mean and shortsighted

As I have said many times before, Alan Turing, a gay man shortened WWII by two years and saved 750,000 lives per Dwight D. Esienhower – what if he had been arrested and jailed for committing gay acts which was unlawful in Great Britain at the time?

Dr. Vivian Thomas, an African-American man helped develop a procedure in the middle of the Jim Crow era to save the lives of babies dying from poor blood flow, called “Blue Babies” – some doctors at Johns Hopkins did not want him in the operating room; what if he was denied the ability to practice?

The Tuskegee Airmen, consisting of African-American pilots, were at first not allowed to fly combat missions during WWII. So, they practiced and practiced honing their skills. They got so good, bomber pilots began asking for the Tuskegee Airmen to protect their planes. Something about putting your life on the line does that to people.

Katherine Johnson received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her contribution to America’s Space Race, as the first woman and African-American to work in a room full of white male mathematicians who guided the space effort.

Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn have penned the difficult to read “Half the Sky” about the maltreatment of women and girls around the world. Treating women like chattel is not only wrong it is economically short-sighted as these communities are competing in a world with only half their assets. Women hold up “half the sky” per a Chinese proverb.

I mention these five examples out of many others as contributions to our planet and country have been made by all kinds of people. If we allowed bigoted perceptions to unduly restrict, criticize and denigrate these folks to the point that they were not allowed to function, the world would be a different place. It matters not how warply twisted and seemingly self-righteous one’s cause, treating people like you want to be treated is still a mainstay of the Christian and other religions. It is a sin to do otherwise at least how I read it.

We must allow civil discourse. We must give people opportunity. We must not denigrate them or their efforts. And, we must not tolerate those who do the opposite of those things to certain people, especially those who are elected officials. To be brutally frank, an elected official has no business conducting themselves in this way. If they do, they need to resign or forced to resign. Full stop. This is especially true when you have more extremists that follow their lead not knowing these folks are just spouting BS to get elected.

  1. Note to Readers: Watching the head of the Southern Baptist Convention on “60 Minutes” last night, it was in large part refreshing to see him attempt to right the ship that has been swamped by covering up too many ministers’ sexual misconduct for decades. He is highly offended by this behavior – both the sexual misconduct and the fact the SBC leaders ignored pleas for help, even denigrating those who had the courage to come forward. He is also perturbed by ministers who are fearful to speak out against those in their congregations who fail to heed the advice noted above for kindergartners. The reason is the ministers are scared of backlash from some members. When a minister is scared to set the example needed, that is an indictment of the followers and the minister. Note, the new leader of the SBC has some beliefs with which I disagree with, but I applaud his manner of discourse and calling out inappropriate behavior.

    • If he is the “head of the Southern Baptist Convention,” it would ordinarily seem he has some influence in his sect of Christianity. Yet from your report, all he can do is be “highly offended.” IOW, why not put actions behind his words? It’s all well and good for soundbites, but to actually DO something is (too) often a non-event.

      • Nan, he actually is. He set up a team to improve and take seriously the notification process and he is cooperating fully with the feds. He needs to do more, but he at least is dealing with this issue. His predecessors made it worse. Keith

  2. A great message Keith unfortunately we are preaching to the choir. The radical extremist have intimidated the very core institutions of America. What was unthinkable behavior is the norm.

    • Holly, thanks. I would say it is not the norm, as more decent behavior gets little press. But, it certainly has an uncomfortable increase in prevalence. We must use every opportunity to say this behavior is inappropriate. Will it make a difference – maybe if the quiet voices get louder. Keith

      • Holly, I do agree on these senators dropping the ball. Jill posted a cartoon of Freddy Krueger being endorsed in spite of his issues. Keith

  3. Note to Readers: One of the things I have observed about the Trump Republican Party is with the party fealty being predicated on espousing The Big Lie, it means that lying in general is open game. So, the lying in the campaign is not dissimilar in concept to some of the stuff the North Koreans have to believe about their leader. The premise for some time is to talk up Trump as an effective leader who is only rough around the edges. Neither of those statements is true. He has been rated as the 5th worst American president, with policies including backing us out of three key agreements (such as the Paris Climate Change Accord) which went on without us, placing market unsettling tariffs on China and allies, botching the travel ban rollout twice, almost killing the ACA and dropping the ball on the pandemic. Oh, and that traitor thing where he incited violence on Congress to stay in powers. And, he is more than just rough around the edges – he acts like a bully, name caller, denigrator and liar.

    • Hello Keith. I watched an interview with a maga trump supporter was making claims that were false. The interviewer point out it was not true and lies. The maga trump support replied it is not a lie if you believe it. The criteria was not that something was accurate or reality to be true, but if you believe it hard enough it was automatically true. What a way to live? How do they function that way? Hugs

  4. Alan Turing was arrested for homosexual activity and hounded to suicide. That was some years after the war ended, so it didn’t interfere with his work on the German codes, but we’ll never know how much faster computer technology would have advanced if he had remained alive and active.

    • Infidel, sadly so true. This was a horrible end to a hero’s life. And, you are so right about what we missed when he died so soon. If I recall correctly, he submitted to this chemical treatment program to change his inclinations, just so that he could still work. But, I think it hastened his depression and demise. Keith

  5. Excellent post, my friend. Every day I see signs that bigotry in all forms is on the rise. The “white replacement theory”, while ridiculous and irrelevant, seems to be a tool of the politicians and some religious leaders to instill fear into people … and sadly, it seems to be working. We the People need to be better than this, need to realize that everyone has value and skin colour, sexual preferences, gender do not make a person less valuable or more valuable … we just are who we are. And wouldn’t the world be a boring place if everyone looked and acted alike???
